Notion for Veterinary Students

A Neurodivergent Friendly Digital Workspace Guide

Free Student Registration

University students in the UK can access the Education Plus Plan for free. This is vital for veterinary medicine because it allows for unlimited file sizes. You can upload high quality surgical videos and anatomy scans without hitting a limit.
To register:
  • Go to Notion and sign up with your university email.
  • Verify your email through your university inbox.
  • In Notion, go to Settings and click on the Plans menu.
  • Select the Education Plus option to activate your free upgrade.

Time Management and Timetables

Managing a complex veterinary timetable can be overwhelming. Notion helps by using visual databases instead of flat calendars. You can create a Master Schedule database and view it as a Timeline. This shows your lectures and clinical rotations as blocks of time. For those who struggle with transitions, you can add a Buffer Time property to each event to remind yourself to move between tasks. The Board View allows you to move tasks between To Do and Done which provides a satisfying visual sense of progress.

Managing Deadlines

Deadlines for lab reports and case studies often cluster together. Use the Formula feature in Notion to create a Days Remaining countdown. This provides a clear urgency level that changes colour as the date approaches. You can also set reminders by typing the @ symbol followed by the date. Notion will send a notification to your phone or desktop. This helps prevent the common neurodivergent experience of time blindness where a deadline feels far away until the last minute.

Revision for Veterinary Exams

Veterinary medicine requires massive memorisation. Notion is excellent for active recall. Use the Toggle feature to write a question on the outside and the answer inside. You can hide the answer until you have tried to remember it. This is perfect for learning pharmacology or pathology. You can also build a Spaced Repetition database. This uses a checkbox to tell you when a topic is due for review based on how well you know it. Embedding diagrams from Wikipedia or your own lecture notes makes your revision pages highly visual.

Organising Course Information

Keep all your modules in one place using a Wiki structure. Create a separate page for each species or system. Within these pages, use Callout blocks to highlight key warnings or clinical signs. The Synced Block feature is very helpful for neurodivergent students. If you have a list of normal vital signs for a dog, you can sync that block across your physiology notes and your clinical placement notes. When you update it in one place, it changes everywhere.
